January 2002 TK's Korner

Welcome to the new issue of TK's Korner. We will cover just some of the items that set Sexton apart from the rest.

Sexton was an ideal field-test site for Prinergy, the new workflow management system from Heidelberg & Creo. Sexton offers many benefits like E-commerce, Trendsetter, "Virtual Prepress", on-line data storage, on-line design, on-line proofing, CIP4 and others.

The Heidelberg/Creo Trendsetter Spectrum system allows us to do halftone proofing and plating on the same machine. That means a one-rip system and no more problems with items falling off the plates on press after the proof has been very carefully approved. Prinergy also gives us the ability to connect multiple output devices to a single digital workflow. This in turn, gives us the flexibility to deliver a three-tiered proofing system to our clients. Each proof gives the client different color options and cost savings based on their needs for a particular project.

A) Digital Dylux replaces the standard blue-lines/silvers/dylux's. This is a CMYK, two sided backed up (not 2 different sheets laminated together) cut down to size and folded finished dylux. Ideal for preliminary proofs when you expect changes to occur, when additional proofs are needed, when you have a number of different locations that need to view something or when others are not very print knowledgeable. They are now able to look at a very affordable color proof that shows color designation, actual trim size, positioning etc.

B) Epson color proof is a single-sided proof used to evaluate "pleasing color". It is produced on a higher-grade paper at a higher resolution to achieve accurate color within 80% of the printed piece. You may decide to use this to show pleasing color as an intermediate proof or to save money on those projects where color is not critical. A combination of the digital dylux and Epson could be all you need in certain circumstances.

C) Digital Match Print is a contract dot for dot color proof. As we are all familiar with the standard film Match Prints and this one is just as accurate. Please note that with any digital proofing, you are actually several generations closer to your originals due to the loss of intermediate steps taken previously.
IE. Traditional film method=Image from disk; disk to film; proof material to plate...
CTP method=Image to proof material to plate...
Note: the result is sharper, truer images with less dot gain.

Prinergy is the world's first truly end-to-end PDF based system. Using PDF as an internal file format gives customers maximum flexibility in data exchange and opens up the production process to greater visibility by all parties involved. Our internal and external clients are now able to do more of their proofing remotely and still maintain total control since it is in the PDF format.

Sexton was able to design, customize and launch an on-line service called "Virtual Prepress", which unites the best of 3 technologies: PDF, CTP, and the Internet. The virtual suite of online services offers a "Real-Time On-Demand" solution that brings together Sexton and the power of the Internet. Its function spans 4 categories: asset management, file access, re-purposing and proofing. Services are platform and browser-independent, allowing customers on-line access to archived job files up to five years old. Search engines, comment attachments, job reports and job upload/download capabilities are included in this packages. IE: You could have a designer shop via the Internet for images stored and request them to be sent one of many ways. Note that these images could have usage comments attached to them and be pulled up via form number designations or other methods. You could have a design already completed and simply view the stored images, place them as FPO's and let us know that an order is ready to go.

CIP4, Cooperation for Integration of (processes in, pre-press, press, post-press). This means that all the settings for color in our proofs is transmitted directly to the presses once you approve your proofs. Making for faster and more economical press checks.

The company helps customers understand our enhanced production capabilities by hosting information sessions about CTP, Prinergy and Virtual Prepress. We are able to introduce something "cool" to you by educating you on the vast potential of PDF. Prinergy has really paved the way for us as far a PDF is concerned. So, why not give me a call to check this out for your next order?

One final note, due to the amount of monthly publications we do, we have a system called Copy Dot. This system allows us to scan in CYMK films of images and re-create those images which may have had their originals lost or misplaced. As one would expect, it is a solution that works and is pretty darn good versus the alternative of scanning a printed piece. Yet, that can also be done with this system as well.

If you would like to join me on one of our upcoming tours, if there is something that you would like me to address, or if you know of someone who might like to receive TK's Korner, please let me know via e-mail at tkubinski@sextonprinting.com or phone. Take care and have a great day.
